Wet and Windy Wellington

Written Tuesday, October 16, 2007....remember, we have crossed
International Date Line despite the date on the blog!

We finally arrived in New Zealand Monday evening, October 15, 3 flights and 24 hours after leaving Los Angeles Saturday night.

We had a large package of travel vouchers, maps, and brochures of things to see and do when we arrived at the hotel.

Found out that our cell phones are working....at 2:00 a.m. (thank you Rick Phelps...miss you too!) got a good night's sleep Monday night and were up early to a beautiful sunny day. Went out after breakfast and picked up essentials you can no longer take on planes, such as shaving cream, toothpaste and contact lens solution.

On the way back to the hotel we stopped by to meet our NZ travel agent, Denise of Experience New Zealand Travel who put this whole trip together and has done a terrific job. Thanks, Denise! See today's picture of Denise & husband Glenn above!

Next stop was the Wellington cable car, which has been around for about 105 years. The Wellington Botanic Garden is at the top. Unfortunately we were too late for tulips and too early for roses and summer flowers. We walked through the park and down the hill back to the city.

The rain arrived, horizontal at times.

The wind arrived, the local news said up to 130km per hour gusts in some areas. The Weather Channel said gusts to 44mph.

We hopped in a cab and came back to the hotel. Ate lunch at a place called 'Arizona' which featured a Texas flag inside. Hmmm! While eating lunch our waiter went out to grab some of the outside chairs that were blowing down the street past a few people "walking" down the street with tattered umbrellas.

A nice day to look out the window at the weather and charge the IPOD.

A couple of observations for the day:
Lots of guys in suits and ties, yes ties. (Even cab drivers) Haven't seen those in a while. Is that New Zealand or capital city?
People are extremely friendly. At the hotel, in shops, in restaurants.

As we had a late lunch today, headed to happy hour upstairs, out for a walk, weather permitting & then back to pack.

Tomorrow, the ferry ride to Picton on the South Island. Could be interesting depending on the weather.
